A streamlined and light-weight air handler is mounted on the inside wall. Refrigerant and condensate lines run through a small hole in the wall to the outside unit. Initial power is to the outside unit and then relayed to the air handler. Since mini splits have no ducts, they avoid the energy losses associated with ductwork of central forced air systems. Duct losses can account for more than 30% of energy consumption for space conditioning, especially if the ducts are in a unconditioned space such as an attic.

Windowless, mini-split air conditioners / heaters are perfect for residential, commercial, and institutional building applications. The most common applications are in multifamily housing or as retrofit add-ons to houses with "non-ducted" heating systems, such as hydronic (hot water heat), radiant panels, and space heaters (wood, kerosene, propane).
